AGARTALA, April 26 � To increase its presence, the Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) has sought its Indian counterpart BSF�s help in using Indian roads to establish BOPs in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, official sources confirmed here on Sunday.
At present, the BGB has skeleton presence in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), still considered a militant hotbed from where anti-Indian elements reportedly carry out subversive activities in Tripura.
Following persistent request by the BSF, the BGB authority has decided to establish BOPs in CHT area to consolidate its presence there from the security point of view.
However, communication network appears a major problem for the BGB to undertake construction of BOPs in the CHT. �At a meeting held at Ramghar in Bangladesh, the BGB has requested us for use of Indian roads for establishment of new BGB BOPs in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. And we assured them of full co-operation�, a senior BSF official who attended the meeting told media.
It is pertinent to mention that establishment of BGB BOPs in the CHT in Bangladesh will help in containing the militancy in Tripura since most of the camps of Indian insurgent groups including NLFT (BM) are located there.
During the meeting, emphasis was given on border domination in view of the forthcoming TTAADC election scheduled to be held on May 3 next. Both sides agreed to increase vigil along the bordering areas to thwart any intrusion bid by militants and anti-national elements to disrupt the election. Besides, emphasis was laid on to curb trans-border crimes and smuggling.
The meeting was held between Inspector General BSF and Region Commander BGB at Ramgarh area, Bangladesh, opposite Sabroom subdivision. The Indian delegation was led by BN Sharma, Inspector General BSF, Tripura Frontier and Bangladesh delegation was led by Brigadier General Md. Habibul Karim, BGBM, Region Commander, BGB South East Region, Chittagong.
Besides DIG of Udaipur sector, nodal officer, and other senior officers were part of Indian delegation. Other members of the Bangladesh delegation were Sector Commander of Khagrachari Sector, Guimara Sector and other senior officers of BGB.
