By Correspondent

IMPHAL, April 16 Normal life was severely affected in Manipur following a 12 hour dawn-to-dusk general strike on Wednesday.

The general strike was called by the Maoist Communist Party Manipur to protest against the merger of Manipur into Indian Union and also to protest against the alleged anti-people activities taken up by the Congress Government and its sitting MP Dr T Meinya Singh, according to a press statement of Nonglen Meetei of the armed group.

The busy Imphal town wore a desolate look since early morning till the end of the strike today. All educational institutions, business establishments including banks and busy Ima market in the heart of Imphal town remained closed during the general strike.

The inter-State and inter-district passenger bus/taxi services and city auto services were also affected by the strike. However, the strike did not affect the normal air traffic and movement of polling personnel along with security forces.
