GUWAHATI, Jan 11 - The 12-hour Assam bandh called by the Coordination Committee of Tribal Organizations�of Assam today, in protest against the Bill that aims to grant ST status to six ethnic communities, evoked mixed response in the State.
The impact of the bandh was near total in the BTAD districts. Shops and business establishments were closed, while vehicles were off the roads in the four districts.
Stray incidents of tyre and effigy burning and road blockades were reported from Chirang. In Bongaigaon, the impact was mixed.
The police picked up bandh supporters from different parts of Kokrajhar district.
The situation was tense in Jagiroad for some time when bandh supporters blocked the NH-37. Security forces rushed to the spot and arrested more than 30 agitators. The impact of the bandh was also felt in Tinsukia.
Life was, however, normal in capital city Guwahati.
