Ban on telecast of serial

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 25 - In connection with a writ petition, the Commissioner of Police Guwahati today informed the Gauhati High Court that he has prohibited telecast of an Assamese serial titled Begum Jaan for a period of 60 days under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act.

The Police Commissioner also served a showcause notice to the channel where the serial was telecast, with the direction to explain why the prohibitory order may not be made to have permanent effect.

The writ petition was filed by United Trust of India.

Earlier, the organisation had also lodged a complaint with the Commissioner of Police alleging that the content of the serial affected the secular ethos of the Constitution of India.

As the police did not take immediate action, the organisation later filed the writ petition in the court. Senior advocate Bijon Kumar Mahajan represented the organisation in the court.
