Ban on social gathering golden rule in fight against COVID-19: Guv

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 27 - Governor Professor Jagdish Mukhi has appealed to the people to show their solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modis call for a three-week nationwide lockdown to break the vicious chain of infection induced by the novel coronavirus.

The Governor also said that when the government has put in place a system to ensure unhindered supply of essential commodities and medicines, the public should maintain adequate personal distance while going out to buy them.

When novel coronavirus has taken its toll on the entire world and India is not an exception, where the curve of positive cases is going up with every passing day, a complete ban on social gathering is considered as the golden principle in the fight against the virus outbreak, the Governor stated in a message on Friday.

Prof Mukhi also urged all people to resolutely follow social confinement till April 14 and lend their efforts to save the country from the scourge of COVID-19. He reiterated that the global outbreak of COVID-19, a novel strain of coronavirus, has had its cascading effect on the health of humanity.

Referring to Prime Minister Modis request to people to abjure their movement outside their homes for 21 days and his reiteration that if they cannot give their 21 days, the nation would go back by 21 years, the Governor urged the people to follow the lockdown and thus render their duties towards the nation.

And if they still violate, the government shall be compelled to take stern action against the violators, he added.

Prof Mukhi also asked the residents to stay away from rumour mongers and fake news. At the same time, he advised people to consult doctors before taking any medicine. He also asked those elements who are violating the rules, to conform to the lockdown in the greater interest of society.

He also appealed to the people to pray for the welfare of those who are working nonstop to keep their immediate neighbourhoods and the local community sanitised.

The Governor hailed the tireless demeanour of the health workers extending their services in this hour of crisis and the dedicated journalists who are working 24X7 against the backdrop of this life-threatening situation to bring forth accurate news and views.

Governor Mukhi also appreciated the selfless services of scores of security personnel, government servants and social organisations involved in the mission. He also appreciated the social organisations providing food to the needy and daily wage earners.
