TURA, Nov 21 - In view of the rising number of COVID-19 related deaths with the onset of winter in West Garo Hills, particularly in the urban areas of Tura, the district authority has prohibited burning of garbage, including dry leaves, in the district.
The District Magistrate has issued the order under Section 144 of CrPC, the Environment (Protection) Action, 1986, and the Solid Management Rules, 2016 in a bid to curb environmental pollution caused by the burning of garbage.
Citing a National Green Tribunal (NGT) ban on burning of waste in open places, the district administration stated that air pollution caused by burning of garbage in and around Tura town could cause severity of respiratory disease due to COVID-19.
The Tura Municipal Board (TMB) has been directed to collect garbage from all the areas within its jurisdiction every morning and ensure that garbage is not burnt in any manner by the municipal staff or the general public.
Further, all local bodies and development committees were also asked to ensure that garbage or dry leaves are not burnt in open spaces.
