IMPHAL, June 16 - Bamboo plantations can be an alternative to jhum cultivation in Manipur and it can bring about socio-economic upliftment of the bamboo growers/farmers and artisans.
This was stated by State Forest and Environment Minister Th Shyamkumar while addressing the inaugural session of the State level workshop on �Bamboo Resource and Product Development� here on Friday. The workshop was organised by National Bamboo Mission, Manipur under the aegis of Forest department. Stating that bamboo products like bamboo shoot is one the most popular delicacies in the State, he said bamboo is also used in making other infrastructure and added that high quality bamboo plantation will improve the financial condition of the farmers and artisans.
In his speech, Additional Chief Secretary Suhel Akhtar observed that although bamboo is abundantly available in the State, the quality of bamboo is not commercially viable. Therefore we need to grow high quality varieties of bamboo.
Additional PCCF Dr DD Haokip said National Bamboo Mission, Manipur is establishing one high tech nursery in Imphal, 10 big nurseries and five small nurseries in the districts to produce quality material.
