Bagan celebrate centenary of IFA Shield win

KOLKATA, July 30 (PTI): The Mohun Bagan Club yesterday celebrated the centenary of their historic IFA Shield win in grand manner. On the day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was given lifetime membership. Celebrated as �Mohun Bagan Day�, the 122-year-old club also awarded the �Ratna� (jewel) to Olympian PK Banerjee for his contribution as coach, particularly in 1977 when it lifted the triple crown of IFA Shield, Rovers Cup and Durand Cup.

The three-hour programme began by felicitating 39 former captains from 1955 to 2009 beginning with Olympian Sailen Manna, who attended the programme despite poor health.

The club also felicitated the crew of Bengali movie �Egaro� (Eleven) which is based on the Shibdas Bhaduri-led Mohun Bagan�s win in 1911. Later the spotlight shifted on chief minister who was bestowed with lifetime membership, while the club donated Rs one lakh to the chief minister�s relief fund.

Legendary P K Banerjee said he had some great memories with the club as a coach in the 1970s.

�It was the team that made it special. I had some fine players. I feel proud to receive this honour,� PK said.
