Baby goes missing from GMCH ward

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 3 In a bizarre incident that exposed the grossly inadequate security presence in the premier Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), a three-day-old girl went missing from the maternity department of the hospital last evening.

Parents of the missing baby, following the incident, have filed a complaint with the GMCH police station today.

The baby was born at the GMCH on April 1 around 5:26 in the evening.

The parents, Swarga Boro and Geeta Boro, are the residents of Geetanagar area. Swarga, the father of the missing child, is a daily-wage earner.

Dr Ramen Talukdar, superintendent, GMCH, when contacted, informed that baby was taken outside the hospital premises last afternoon by a woman who never turned up again.

Strangely though, the woman, who reportedly absconded with the infant, had spent hours with the patient as an attendant in the last couple of days.

The woman was introduced to us as the patients attendant, Dr Talukdar reiterated.

We have taken the matter seriously and very soon the entire security arrangement of the hospital would be reviewed and even close circuit television cameras would be installed at strategic locations, including the maternity ward in a phased manner, Dr Talukdar stated.

Police, meanwhile, have initiated a search operation and said to have gathered clues about the whereabouts of the woman.
