BAA gearing up for national meet

GUWAHATI, May 16 � The Basketball Association of Assam (BAA) is bracing up to host the 32nd Youth National (U-16) Basketball Championship here in the city from June 12 to 19.

Giving details about the championship, chairman of the organising committee, MP Gaurav Gogoi said in a press conference here today that the meet will be organised at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium, Sarusajai sports complex and NF Railway Indoor Stadium, Maligaon.

Altogether 50 teams in both boys and girls sections will contest for the titles and the meet will be a league-cum-knock-out affair.

BAA secretary Mukut Medhi revealed that 50 players, both boys and girls, will be picked from this championship and the Indian team for the FIBA (U-16) Championship will be selected from this batch. The international meet will be held at Myanmar in August.

On Assam teams� preparation and possibilities in this championship, Medhi said the girls team has every possibility of becoming champions while the boys will reach the semifinal stage. The State teams were picked from the recently concluded inter-district tournament. Medhi said in order to facilitate the cagers, the BAA will complete the courts at the RG Baruah Sports Complex within December.
