Awareness workshop on bamboo products, its application held

BAIHATA CHARIALI, May 18 - Under the aegis of the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC ) Assam and in collaboration with the Baredala Hasta Silpa Co-operative Society Limited (BHSCSL), a day-long workshop on awareness on bamboo products and its application was held at Baredala-Jayantipur under Kamrup district on May 17.

Sponsored by North Eastern Council (NEC) Shillong, Ministry of DoNER and Government of India, the workshop was held under the chairmanship of Gobinda Rajbongshi, president of BHSCSL where H Priya Kumar Singh and Anil Chandra Das from CBTC took part as resource persons.

The resource persons discussed about the techniques of manufacturing various products of bamboo, its application and the demand of these products in the international market. Though the artisans of BHSCSL have been manufacturing bamboo basketry for poultry, bamboo broom and some other ornamental items, but this workshop encouraged the artisans to manufacture some other products like bamboo furniture, floor mat and tiles, ceiling board etc.

The resource persons informed that to manufacture these products the CBTC has been providing technical training to aspirant artisans from time to time in various locations and they would execute necessary arrangements for organising such a training at Baredala in the future also.

The bamboo artisans of BHSCSL under the leadership of senior artisans Umesh Deka and Bharat Rajbongshi displayed their bamboo products.

Participating in the workshop, the in-charge of Saraighat Extension Centre SIRD Ramen Baruah spoke on the occasion and encouraged the local artisans.

Earlier, Kanak Deka, secretary of BHSCSL explained the purpose of the workshop and felicitated the guests.
