GUWAHATI, June 16 - St Francis De Sales (SFS) School, Narengi, Guwahati, organised an awareness programme on child labour on the school premises today.
Even though World Day Against Child Labour is held on June 12, this programme was organised as an extension of the theme event, in which more than 1,500 students participated.
In keeping with the programme, the morning assembly at the school was conducted by the members of the Child Rights Club, who presented short speeches on the theme of child labour, besides enacting a short play that addressed the issue. The event was conducted under the guidance of Sandra Abraham, staff secretary of the school.
Fr George Thomas, Principal of the school addressed the students on the significance of the programme on child labour. He exhorted the students to influence their parents and through their parents, others to do away with child labour so that every child in society can read, write and play.
A band and a musical performance by students followed and it was supervised by Sushmita Modak, a teacher of the school.
The chief guest of the day, Nurul Laskar, chief adviser to PRSI Guwahati Chapter, told the students, �You are very lucky to be able to study in a good school, wear nice dresses, and play all kinds of games. But there are over two crore children in India who get up in the morning and rush to the railway station or a motor garage to labour hard to earn money for their family.� He elaborated on the different measures taken up by the government to eradicate the menace of child labour from society.
Subsequently, a panel discussion was held on the subject �Creating Awareness on Child Rights and supporting Child Education,� in which senior students of the school took part. The programme ended with a vote of thanks offered by Parnali Das, a Class IX student. The entire programme was anchored and coordinated by Arnab Jyoti Das, PRO, SFS School.
