By Correspondent

DHEMAJI, March 26 - Joining the district administrations efforts to create mass awareness about prevention of COVID-19 in Dhemaji, a few organisations, including Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), NGO Rural Volunteers Centre, College Teachers Association and student unions have been organising a series of awareness programmes separately in different parts of Dhemaji district.

The IRCS, Jonai branch with the help of the district Health department conducted a week-long campaign on novel coronavirus prevention and urged the rural people to work with responsibility in this regard.

During the campaign, Red Cross volunteers arranged street corner meetings at several spots and delivered speeches for creating awareness on preventive measures. They also distributed leaflets outlining necessary precautions to be adopted by the people to prevent COVID-19 from entering their areas.

The volunteers also alerted and warned the public not to believe and get swayed away by rumours and unapproved pseudo-scientific facts that have flooded the social media.

They also gave public demonstration of the WHO-recommended process of handwashing using soap and water.

The rural people of the district have demanded the district administration to arrange adequate number of quarantine chambers, medicines, trained health workers and testing centres in the district for convenience of the people.

As per a district administration report, the Health department has readied 40 isolation beds in different hospitals and public health centres.

Sources said that as many as 648 local people have returned to the district from abroad in recent days, out of which 140 are reportedly from easternmost Jonai subdivision. The district Health department has asked the people to undergo at least 14-day self-quarantine to prevent possible outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
