Awareness generated on children�s safety during emergencies

HAILAKANDI, Nov 16 - An awareness drive on �Children�s safety during emergencies� commemorating IDDR and NDR Day was carried out here on Thursday.

AAPDA Mitra volunteers gave demonstration to children from vulnerable areas and children with special ability on safety measures to be adopted during natural calamities and other emergencies at a programme held at the Government VM HS School.

District Project Officer of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Rupjoy Maibangsa said children are most vulnerable to disasters and the best way to safeguard them is creating awareness on minimum safety techniques they can adopt at the time of natural disasters and other emergencies such as disruption of basic services like electricity and water supply.

Drawing and extempore speech competitions were organised on the theme of disaster management and also for children with special ability. Prizes were distributed to the winners of the drawing and extempore speech competitions by Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chief Executive Officer of DDMA, Keerthi Jalli and other dignitaries. Scores of minors, besides children with special ability participated with enthusiasm, which drew loud cheers from the dignitaries.

Officials of the line departments, including fire and emergency services were present on the occasion. IEC material were distributed by NCC cadets among the participating children. Elsewhere in the district, Children�s Day commemorating the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was celebrated with much enthusiasm by many government and private schools and anganwadi centres.

Everyone reminisced him for his contribution towards nation-building and for his unfettered love for children. It was also because of his extra warmth towards them that children fondly remember him today as �Chacha Nehru�.
