Autonomous State to be Engtis demand

By Correspondent

DIPHU, March 25 - Two battle-hardened political leaders of Karbi Anglong, Horensing Bey of the BJP and the sitting Congress MP Birensing Engti of the Indian National Congress filed their nominations for the Diphu parliamentary constituency before the Returning officer at Diphu this afternoon.

Congress contender Birensing Engti was accompanied by hundreds of Congress supporters and party officials. After submitting his nomination, the octogenarian Congress leader told reporters that he commands support in all the three hill autonomous districts of Assam which constitutes the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency. If the Congress is voted to power, my principle demand will remain creation of an autonomous State comprising the three autonomous hill districts of Assam. The Congress will also demand creation of a Lok Sabha and two assembly constituencies for Dima Hasao district. I shall go to the people with an agenda of all-round development of the hills region of Assam and I am confident of getting their support, a confident Birensing Engti said.

The BJP nominee who reached the Deputy Commissioners office was flanked by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Councils Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang, Bokajan MLA Numol Momin, Executive Member of the council and his proposer Amarsing Tisso, Dima Hasao Autonomous Councils Chief Executive Member Debolal Garolosa and number of Executive Members of both the autonomous councils. Around 5000 BJP supporters in their traditional attire were present at the venue to cheer their candidate.

BJP candidate Horensing Bey who was the apex leader of now disbanded United Peoples Democratic Solidarity (UPDS ) and under whose leadership the historic tripartite peace treaty which is better known as MoS (Memorandum of Settlement) was signed in 2011 to end the decade-long hostility, while brushing aside all theories regarding his acceptability said that he fought for the cause of the people of the hills which takes in all communities residing within the autonomous hill districts of Assam. Before signing of the MoS, my organisation constituted a committee which was joined by more than 55 ethnic organisations of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao belonging to every tribal and non-tribal community. With their active support behind we signed the peace accord, and now I am enjoying the same kind of support beside the natural support of BJP so winning is no longer a factor, Horensing Bey said.
