Autonomous councils go to polls today

JAGIROAD, June 6 � Polling teams with their poll materials have left for their alloted voting centres to conduct the Tiwa Autonomous Council elections in the respective areas in Morigaon district. The polls will be held tomorrow.

A total of 752 polling officials including presiding officers are already engaged in 188 polling stations falling under the four LAC�s namely, Jagiroad, Morigaon, Laharighat and Batadrawa in Morigaon district.

A total of 122 candidates of Congress, Asom Gana Parishad, BJP and independents are there in the fray, where 1,23,107 voters of which 60,304 are male and 62,303 are female under the district will cast their votes.

Our Bihpuria Correspondent adds : The inclusion of non-Deuries and non-Thengals, that is, the general people�s names in the voter list of these autonomous council election tomorrow has created great reactions within the Bihpuria LAC since last months of declaring the election. Several protests, bandhs, road blockade etc. had been going on. But no steps have been taken by the government to protect the general people and their area, from the jurisdiction of the autonomous council areas.

Lastly, the non-tribal people also decided not to vote in the election to be held tomorrow. The Sangram Samities of Barkhet, Kachikanta, Panbari, Janabari, Bhogpur Chariali, Bandardewa, Santapur, Bagicha of Bihpuria LAC expressed their decision of not taking part in the election.

Meanwhile, the Deuri and Thengal Kacharis students unions also requested the non-Deuries and non-Thengal people not to vote in the election. On the other hand, the protesting bodies have called for �Janata Curfew� tomorrow in the areas going to the polls.
