GUWAHATI, March 23 - The National Union of Journalists India (NUJI) and Journalists� Association of Assam (JAA) have vehemently condemned the brutal attack on Guwahati-based journalist Chakrapani Parashar and demanded exemplary punishment to the culprits involved in the crime.
In a press release, Bhupen Goswami, national vice president of NUJI, Dhirendra Nath Chakravarty, president of JAA and Dalim Phukan, general secretary of JAA expressed serious concern over the rise of crime against journalists in the state and demanded the government to introduce the �Journalist Protection Act�.
It may be mentioned here that JAA has been fighting for introducing the Journalist Protection Act, which will ensure safety and security of scribes. In this regard, JAA has already submitted a memorandum to the Governor on January 31 last. The rising attack on scribes is a matter of serious concern where the government has remained a mute spectator, added the press release.
The journalists� organisation demanded the government to bear the medical expenses of Chakrapani Parashar. The Journalists� Association of Assam has in the meantime presented a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the Chief Minister and demanded a comprehensive Journalist Protection Act.
There is a need for a comprehensive Act with clear provision of registering complaints in police stations on intimidation, attack or torture of journalists, the release added.

Bokakhat Press Club and Sub Divisional Journalists� Union have expressed strong resentment over the incident of attack on the TV journalist and condemned it with strong words.
Founder president of APCU Bhabes Saikia and Assam Journalists� Union president Jitu Sarma Rajkhowa, including all the mediapersons of Bokakhat, Kaziranga, Kamargaon and Numaligarh have demanded the government to take stern action against the culprits.
