SHILLONG, Jan 24 - The Shillong Press Club (SPC) and Meghalaya Electronic Media Association (MEMA) have condemned the attack on journalist, Biplab Dey from Garo Hills, who was allegedly assaulted by timber smugglers last night in Athiabari, West Khasi Hills District.

Dey, who is also a correspondent of The Assam Tribune, was attacked by timber smugglers.

He went to the area to take photo and video evidences of illegal transportation of timber from Garo hills region to Assam.�The members assaulted him, snatched both his phones and destroyed his camera.�

�SPC condemns this attack in the strongest terms and urges police to immediately arrest the criminals and deal with them as per law,� SPC president, David Laitflang said.

�MEMA considers this act as an attack on the fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression of the media that play a crucial role in enabling citizens to know what is happening around, to keep the public informed and to expose the misdeeds of the mighty and powerful,� Kyrmenlang Uriah, MEMA president said.
