SONARI, Aug 20 � Defying the decision of yesterday�s Cabinet Minister level inter-State peace meeting, the NSCN(IM) fired at a team of Assam Police personnel led by Sivasagar Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Kumar Singh at Charaipung Bimalapur area within Charaideo subdivision near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border at about 2.40 pm today.
Seeing the police personnel moving towards Naharani (No 1 Charaipung), a village of Arunachalis within Assam border, the NSCN cadres started to fire indiscriminately targetting the SP. An encounter followed for about half an hour between the police personnel and a group of around 30-40 NSCN cadres. The SP, however, escaped unhurt.
One APBn personnel, Nareswar Taran received injuries as he fell from a hillside while two NSCN cadres were reportedly injured in the encounter.
It may be mentioned here that an inter-State peace meeting was held yesterday evening at Bimalapur in which Assam Law Minister Pranab Gogoi and Taku Dabi, Home Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, participated along with other high police and administrative officers of the two States. The joint meeting decided to bring about normalcy and peace in the region by starting joint patrolling by Assam and Arunachal Pradesh�s police and constituting peace committees with citizens of both the States.
Defying all the decisions of joint peace initiative, the NSCN(IM) again created a tense situation today which is prevailing since August 13 last. After today�s firing, the villagers of the border area started to flee from the area.
Sources informed that the NSCN(IM) has built bunkers at Naharani, Hachirusa, Kamko, Tanglam and Ashimbasti within Assam border. These villages were established by Arunachalis within Assam border in 1972 as alloted by then Chief Minister of Assam late Bimala Prasad Chaliha for jhum cultivation in the area.
DIG (Eastern Region) and Upper Assam Home Commissioner visited the site of today�s encounter this evening to take stock of today�s developments.
Economic blockade: A joint meeting of various organisations, including AJYCP, AASU, ATTSA, ATASU, Border Security forum, Small Tea Grower�s Association held at Bimalapur LP School today decided to start an economic blockade of Arunachal Pradesh. The blockade will start at 5 am tomorrow at Naharka, Jaipur and Kanubari under the banner of AASU and AJYCP.
NSCN denial: In a press release issued by Alem Wangsu, �Deputy Chaplee Kilonser� (Minister) of self-styled �government of People�s Republic of Nagalim stated that NSCN has not involved in the ongoing clashes at Charaipung.
Effigy burnt: The Charaideo unit of AJYCP and AASU�s regional units of Borhat and Sapekhati today burnt the effigies of Pranab Gogoi alleging his soft stand on the issue.
