GUWAHATI, April 13 - The Republican Party of India (A), a constituent of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), today said that if voted to power for the second consecutive time, it will press Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider and review the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Ramdas Athawale, who is also the president of the RPI(A), said he would ask Modi to consider the sentiments of the people of the region before going ahead with the Bill.
�I will move the Prime Minister to make changes in the Bill, keeping the mood of the public in mind,� Athawale told reporters here today.
He said that the RPI will field three candidates in the Lok Sabha polls in Assam � from Dhubri, Barpeta and Guwahati constituencies.
Athawale said that although he requested Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to leave the Barpeta seat for the RPI, the same could not materialise. �Hence, we decided to field our own candidate in Barpeta and two other constituencies,� he said.
�In all the other constituencies, RPI will support BJP and its partner AGP,� he said. The Minister exuded confidence that BJP and AGP together will bag at least 11 seats of the total 14 in the State. The RPI is contesting 50 seats across the country.
