ATASU opposes Tribal Sangha bandh call

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Jan 10 - The All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU) has strongly opposed the 24-hour Assam bandh called by the All Assam Tribal Sangha tomorrow, criticising the Sangha for trying to interfere in the process of granting ST status to the six ethnic communities of Assam, including the Tai Ahom community.

We will never compromise on our rights. The Sangha cannot dictate terms to the Assamese people on the issue of ST status to the six communities, said central committee chief advisor of the student body, Aswini Kumar Chetia, in a press release issued here today.

Basanta Gogoi of the ATASUs Kamrup Metro district committee, said the ATASU welcomes the decision of the Union government to grant the ST status to these six communities, for which they have been waging a long battle.

Criticising tomorrows bandh call, Gogoi said the ST status is a constitutional right of all the six communities and we condemn anyone interfering in this.

All the right-thinking people of the State should oppose the bandh, he said.
