SILCHAR, Oct 14 - How often do we hear about people pitching in their best efforts pursuing their passion at work. Meet 60-year-old Shyamoli Kalita, a familiar face among subscribers of newspapers in Silchar who travels around 17 kms daily from her residence in the interior area of Udharbond constituency to distribute dailies to earn her living. Kalita, by far the eldest hawker here has earned love and respect from everyone she comes across while doing her task meticulously despite her age and physical condition. �It has been so many years now, we have never seen the woman unenthusiastic enough to skip her chores. It is her passion to sell newspapers and this has kept her going even at this hour of global crisis due to the COVID-19,� says a newspaper agent from where she collects her copies for her subscribers.
When contacted about how she manages her living braving her age, Kalita told The Assam Tribune, �Since coming here from Guwahati many years ago, I have been doing this job and this is what I love doing. Managing issues has become a tough ask now, but, life must go on.� Realising her deep love towards the profession and contagious enthusiasm, Development Officer at The Assam Tribune Pranab Dutta Goswami extended a helping hand to the woman on behalf of the organisation by giving away merchandise including facemask and some food items. Members of Rashtriya Sangbad Sanstha, newspaper agency were also present on the occasion.
�I was surprised to come across the woman and her spirit to collect the newspapers and going out for distributing those. She looked thoroughly professional and yet had so much love for her job even at this age when others would feel shudders down their spine. We are happy to be able to do a small bit for her and wish her good health and happiness,� Goswami said.
