Associations seek punishment to youths for assaulting women

SILCHAR, Dec 20 - Demanding arrest of three youths who were allegedly involved in assaulting two women belonging to a tribal community, a number of student associations staged a protest here on Wednesday. The irate protesters gave a 24- hour time limit to the district administration to arrest the accused persons.

�Three youths physically assaulted two tribal vendors, who are the residents of Hmarkhawlien village in Cachar district, for allegedly stealing a stray dog and attempting to sell its meat at a roadside market in the Jail Road area of the town. A video of the attack on the women got viral on social media following which an FIR was lodged against the attackers,� the protesters said.

The protesting associations, including the Barak Valley Hmar Students� Association, the Manipuri Youths� Front Assam, the Dimasa Students� Union, the All Assam Manipuri Students� Union and the Cachar Hindi Bhashi Chatra Parishad have made it clear that if the demand is not met as per the deadline, they would resort to massive agitation.

On the other hand, both Deputy Commissioner Dr S Laxmanan and Cachar SP Rakesh Roushan assured the protesters that steps would be taken as per law.
