Assembly gherao by BJP undemocratic: APCC

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 9 - The APCC today described the Assembly gherao programme by the State wing of the BJP as an undemocratic act.

In a statement here, APCC vice president Ripun Bora said the Assembly is a constitutional institution of the elected representatives of the people. State legislatures and the Parliament constitute the mainstay of the countrys democratic polity, said Bora.

An act of gheraoing such institutions is a serious threat to the countrys democratic polity and a government which sits idle in the face of perpetrating such crimes is bound to be described as indulgent to such nasty acts, he said.

He also expressed the hope that the people of the State would give a fitting reply to the BJP in the 2016 Assembly elections for this anti-democratic act.

He also questioned the genuineness of the tirade of Prime Minister Narendra Modi against corruption, citing the example of his party inducting Himanta Biswa Sarma as a member despite the fact that the saffron party had been charging Sarma with being the kingpin of corruption during the past several years.

Some senior BJP leaders like SS Ahluwaliya had threatened that all the graft cases against Sarma would be opened in the event of the BJP coming to power, Bora recalled.

Our Jorabat correspondent adds: Over 400 BJP workers and supporters from different districts who were on their way to Guwahati to participate in the partys Vidhan Sabha Gherao programme, were stopped by police today.

The protesters were detained at Sonapur Mini Stadium from early morning till 11.30 am. Later, they came out of the stadium and blocked the NH-37, badly affecting flow of traffic. The police had to use force to disperse them.
