Assam�s show in Ranji Trophy hailed

GUWAHATI, Nov 21 � The cricketing buffs of the State are in full praise for the State Ranji team which snatched three points from former champions Bengal at their home ground.

At Eden Gardens, Kolkata yesterday, Assam scored 588 for six declared in reply to Bengal�s first innings total of 562 for six. For the first time in the history of Ranji Trophy Assam earned major points in a match against Bengal.

Hailing Assam�s performance, former international umpire and vice chairman of Sports Authority of Assam Suren Ram Phookun said, it was a great show by the Assam batsmen and it will definitely encourage the State youngsters.

Assam Cricket Association (ACA) secretary Bikash Baruah said it was a team effort and great exhibition of temperament by the batsmen which enabled in fetching three points from a strong opponent. He hoped in the coming matches all the players will be able to get down in their business with confidence. Baruah also praised the selectors and members of the ACA cricket committee and team management for this gallant performance. ACA selector Naba Konwar opined that along with the out side players, local boys like Gokul Sharma, Tarjinder Singh, Sib Sankar Roy, Arlen Konwar also contributed heavily in the Assam innings and that was the most brightest part of the match.

Former noted players like Sayed Zakaria Zuffri, Dipak Das, Umananda Bora, Nasir Gul Khan, Susanta Biswa Sarma also praised the Assam team for their courageous performance.

Assam team for Mumbai match: The Assam Cricket Association today made one change in the Ranji team which will play against Mumbai in the away match from November 24 to 27. Parvez Aziz has been included in the team in place of Deepak Sharma.

The team: Amol Mazumder, Dhiraj Goswami, S Sriram, Tarjinder Singh, Sib Sankar Roy, gokul Sharma, Kunal Saikia, Rajdeep Das, Abu Neschim Ahmed, Ranjit Mali, Arlen Konwar, Dhiraj Jadhav, Prakash Bhagat, Parvez aziz, Sujay Tarafdar.
