Assamese versions of The Ahoms and The Principia released

GUWAHATI, March 13 - The Assamese versions of The Ahoms and Principia, The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, were released today at an event held at Swahid Nyas here.

The translated version of The Ahoms, authored by Arup Kumar Dutta, was released by eminent writer and veteran journalist Homen Borgohain. The book was translated into Assamese by senior research fellow in the Department of English, Gauhati University Parag Kumar Deka.

The Assamese edition of Sir Isaac Newton�s Principia, The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, was released by retired professor of physics, Gauhati University Dr Barindra Kumar Sarma. The book was translated into Assamese by Professor of physics, Tezpur University Dr Jayanta Kumar Sarma and edited by retired assistant professor of physics, Handique Girls� College Basanta Deka.

Both the books have been published by Orchid Publication. Borgohain praised Arup Kumar Dutta for the original work and Parag Kumar Deka for translating the book into Assamese.

�It is an important addition to the Assamese language and literature. One should write history books in such a way so as to them interesting for everyone to read. The study of history seeps into many facets of our everyday life. It provides a working knowledge of the story of mankind,� he added.

Borgohain added that both the books have the scope to further enrich the Assamese language and literature.

Arup Kumar Dutta, who was also present at the event, gave a brief outline of the creation of the book. The book�s translator Parag Kumar Deka also spoke on this occasion.

Dutta�s The Ahoms is a distinctive work, which encompasses the entire six hundred years of reign by the Ahom dynasty within 450 pages. Written in a gripping style, the book makes the events of Ahom history come alive for the reader with its framed narrative and fast-moving story-telling.

Earlier, inaugurating the book The Principia, Dr Barindra Kumar Sarma said, �The book is regarded as one of the pioneering books in the world of science. Published in 1687, this book has been seen as a pillar in the history of intellectual development of mankind.�

The Principia�s translator Dr Sarma said, �It took altogether 12 years to compile the book � seven years for translation and five years for editing. In the book, Newton discussed the relations between various natural forces, including the force of gravitation, different kinds of motions and the structure of the universe. Newton used the tool of geometry to project the natural events as the philosophy of Nature.�
