NORTH LAKHIMPUR, May 6 � �The Assamese language is the outcome of century long harmonious coexistence of various communities and ethnicity that contributed towards its formation. It does not exclusively belong to any race, community, ethnic group or faith and it evolved in the past with these shared and inclusive usages.� This was the observation made by Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora, president of Asam Sahitya Sabha while addressing the public as the chief guest in the opening session of 57th central Rongali Bihu Sanmilan in North Lakhimpur recently.
Dr Bora said that Assamese language had been enriched by inputs of various elements used by diverse speakers and hence emerged as a unique language symbolising unity, pluralism and inclusiveness. He also said that the very core of Assamese identity and nationalism is defined by Assamese language.
Bipul Deori, recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award for translation attended the session as an appointed speaker. In his speech Deori said that translations of literary works could be a catalyst in forming bridges among various communities in the society.
Earlier, the meeting was inaugurated by Gaurav Bothra, Deputy Commissioner, Lakhimpur and it was chaired by Uday Shankar Hazarika, president of the Bihu sanmilan. Three prominent persons, innovator Uddhab Bharali, nature conservationist Baliram Gogoi and film critic, scribe Farhana Ahmed was felicitated at the function.
