Diphu, May 29: In a joint operation by West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao police two alleged extortionists were arrested from Umrangso locality of Dima Hasao autonomous district yesterday. A case in Hamren police station (No 11/2021) under section 386/507/511 of IPC has been registered in this connection.
Arrested persons have been identified by police as Borlongki Timung aged around twenty nine, resident of Baithalangso general area of West Karbi Anglong, and John Engti aged around twenty six years, resident of Umrangso, Dima Hasao district. Both have been taken into police custody. West Karbi Anglong's Superintendent of Police Ajagwran Basumatary has informed the local media that they have been accused of making demands over phone to traders and businessmen of Hamren town with intent of illegal extortion.
One bike, two mobile phones and SIM cards used for making extortion calls have been recovered from the accused persons.
