NALBARI, April 19: Thousands of people on Monday paid their last respect to former Chief Minister of Assam Dr Bhumidhar Barman after his mortal remains arrived at his home district. The Deputy Commissioner of Nalbari Purabi Konwar also paid her last respect to the former Chief Minister at the DC office premises.The Additional Deputy Commissioner Kalpana Deka and Urmi Medhi also offered garlands on the mortal remains of Dr Barman who took initiatives in declaring Nalbari as revenue district.

The employees of the office also offered their last respect and condoled his death.Then the body of the senior Congress leader was taken to the office of the District Congress Committee.

It may be mentioned here that Dr Barman led the district Congress during the crisis of the party despite threats from ULFA. In Rajib Bhawan, the President of the district Congress committee Suresh Ch Mahanta placed the party flag on his mortal remains as respect to their beloved leader. At the party office, the General Secretary of APCC Pradyut Kumar Bhuyan, Youth Congress leader Ratul Patowary, district women Congress cell paid their last respects to Dr Barman.

Earlier, his body was taken to Nalbari Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital where the Joint Director of Health Services Dr Umesh Phangshu and senior doctors offered last respects to Dr Barman who was reportedly an architect of the civil hospital.

The Nalbari Zilla Sahitya Sabha also condoled the demise of Dr Barman at their office.When the vehicle carrying his body entered the district on NH 31 a number of organisations and individuals offered their last respect to him at Ghograpar Chawk in the district. Later his body was taken to Mukalnuwa and Belsor at night.

According to his only son, to Diganta Barman, the body of the State's former Chief Minister will be cremated at the Bhakatram Udyan of Singimara near Belsor on Tuesday morning with full State honour. Several State leaders are likely to attend the funeral.
