Guwahati, April 3: A six-year-old girl was allegedly killed inside a moving train in Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Friday morning, triggering panic among passengers and leading to the arrest of her father by railway authorities.

The incident took place around 9:15 am in a general coach of the Dekargaon–Murkongselek Express when the train was near Silonibari station, officials said.

The victim, identified as Sumi Murmu, was allegedly attacked inside the coach.

Personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information and apprehended the accused, identified as her father, Sunil Murmu.

A spokesperson of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said that eyewitness statements were recorded and the body was taken into custody for further procedures.

“After recording eyewitness accounts and taking custody of the body, the train departed from Silonibari at 10:58 am,” the spokesperson said.

Officials said the motive behind the alleged attack remains unclear.

Sources added that the weapon used in the crime has not yet been recovered.

The accused is reportedly not in a fully conscious state and has been unable to provide coherent details regarding the incident, including his place of residence.

In a brief interaction with the press after his arrest, Sunil Murmu denied involvement in the killing.

When asked if he had murdered his daughter, he responded, “No. Everyone attacked me.”

He also claimed ignorance about the circumstances under which he was attacked by co-passengers and attempted to distance himself from the crime.

“I don’t know why people attacked me,” he said.

The accused further alleged that someone else present in the train was responsible for the child’s death.

“It was not me… someone else in the train killed her,” he claimed, adding that they were travelling from Biswanath Chariali.

Authorities are now examining multiple angles, including eyewitness testimonies, to piece together the sequence of events. Further investigation is underway.
