Six arrested in Cachar for assaulting woman on suspicion of practising witchcraft

Silchar, June 29: Based on an FIR Cachar police arrested six persons in connection with an alleged instance of witch hunting.
According to Nirupam Nath , OC Dowarbondh police station, a 33-year-old woman, a resident of Baluchuri area of Dowarbondh was allegedly beaten by the six accused persons on suspicion of her being a witch and alleged that she was responsible for death of son of one of the accused persons. The incident took place on June 18 and accordingly, an FIR was filed on June 20.
The OC informed that the accused persons have been identified as Sanjit Kurmi, Srikumar Kurmi, Birilal Kurmi, Moina Kurmi, Monua Kurmi and Mohan Kurmi have been booked under DWB case No-124/21 U/S- 147/148/149/325 IPC, R/W Sec 4/7 Of Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection)Act 2015. They will be forwarded to court on Tuesday, the police officer informed.
