Hailakandi, August 2: The local people have stopped the plying of goods loaded trucks in Lowairpoa of Karimganj district in NH 08 in Assam-Tripura border.

Large number of people gathered on the highway and prevented the movement of trucks towards Tripura from Assam. It can be mentioned here that after the closure of all routes leading towards Mizoram via Barak Valley, the goods loaded trucks started to ply through Tripura border for Mizoram. After the killing of six Assam police personnel by Mizos in Assam-Mizoram bordering Lailapur on July 26, the members of various organisations and people started the economic blockade. The rail tracks were uprooted in Mohammedpur of Hailakandi district in protest against the killing and blocked the Assam-Mizoram inter-state NH, which created the crisis of essential commodities in Mizoram.

Later trucks started to enter Mizoram through Assam-Tripura bordering Lowairpoa from July 31. The local BJP workers and people protested and gave an ultimatum to police and civil officials of Patherkandi circle and also to the district administration of North Tripura district to stop the plying of goods loaded trucks via NH 08. They blocked the road today morning and a large number of trucks were stranded in Lowairpua.

On the other hand, Barak Democratic Front (BDF) has reacted strongly on the issue and urged the BJP of Assam not to play a dual role on the border crisis. The chief convenor of the front, Pradip Duttaray alleged that the state government and BJP have failed to come to a concrete solution on the issue and demanded stringent punishment to the persons involved in the firing in Assam-Mizoram border.
