Mangaldoi Bar Association adopts 'NOTA' for internal elections

By Correspondent

Mangaldai, Feb 7: The Mangaldai Bar Association (MBA), one of the premiere organizations of the registered legal practitioners of the state, has decided to introduce the ' NOTA' ( None Of The Above) practice in their internal elections.

The decision was taken in a recently held special general meeting which was presided over by senior lawyer N.C.Chakravorty.

While speaking to The Assam Tribune, Hemanta Kr Sarma, secretary of MBA stated that since the last several years demand has been made for the inclusion of NOTA in the internal election, he expressed his satisfaction that the constitution amendment was endorsed by the house unanimously.

"The NOTA adopted by MBA is a bit different from the NOTA used in parliamentary or assembly elections. The NOTA has no bearing in the outcome of the parliamentary election, however, the latest amendment of the constitution of MBA, mandated that if votes secured by a candidate is less than the votes casted in favour of the NOTA , then the election to that post shall be declared as cancelled and fresh election shall be held," Secretary Sarma said.

He further informed that the candidates who secured fewer votes than NOTA, will not be eligible to offer their candidature in the fresh election. "The NOTA of MBA is not like the tooth and nail-less tiger as in the case of parliamentary elections," he added.
