Silchar, Feb 7: In a major catch against illegal transport of Burmese betel nuts (Supari) and fertilizers, Cachar Police has nabbed several persons involved in the crime and also raided some godowns.

Cachar SP Ramandeep Kaur, who had already made it clear that while the Government has taken a clear stance against crime and criminal activities, the Assam Police is acting on this with a rigorous and vigorous approach. "As many as 18 persons have been apprehended so far and around 10 godowns of Burmese betel nuts and fertilizers in various parts of the district were raided so far.

From one of the godowns, 600 bags of Burmese betel nuts and from another godown 150 bags of betel nuts were recovered," said Kaur.

"This process of going all out against the betel nuts mafias and other criminals will continue and there could be more arrests in the coming days. There is a huge gang that is operating for years to accomplish criminal incidents of dacoity. In recent times, there were several incidents of dacoity reported in the district. Police arrested as many as eight dacoits. In the process of arresting the dacoits, two incidents of encounters have taken place in which the two of the arrested dacoits tried to escape. Some of the police officers were also injured," the SP told media persons on Sunday.

Further, Additional SP (HQ) Subrata Sen informed the media that among the arrested persons, when betel nut mafia Nizamuddin was attempting to escape, controlled firing had to be done to nab him and in the incident, he sustained a bullet injury on his leg. A dacoit named Hussain Ahmed Laskar from Sonai, who was involved in three instances of dacoity was apprehended as well. A .32 mm pistol was recovered from him. However, leading to the recovery, there was an attempt to escape wherein to prevent the escape, controlled firing was attempted and the dacoit sustained serious injuries. Two police persons were also injured in the incident. The dacoits and betelnut mafia along with two police personnel who sustained injuries in the operation are undergoing treatment at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital, the Additional SP maintained.
