Diphu, April 24: A twelve-year-old Karbi girl of West Karbi Anglong Autonomous District was allegedly burnt alive by the members of a family at Raha in Nagaon district on Thursday where she was engaged as a maid.

As informed by the victim's parents, she was staying and working as a house maid at Prokash Borthakur's residence in Raha. The local police after registering an F.I.R (Case No. 97/21 under Section 302) arrested Prokash Borthakur and his son Nayan Jyoti Borthakur. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been sent for post mortem and a report of the autopsy is awaited.

Parents of the victim while speaking to the media said that their daughter was residing at Prokash Borthakur's residence since the last four years.

"We belong from an underprivileged family and due to lack of proper schools in the village, we had to send our children to stay and study at Raha where she met with this incident" Sarthe Ronghang said.

Ex-president of Karbi Students Association, Nagaon district, Avijit Kro has expressed grief over the incident. Kro has informed that he and his associates are doing an awareness program against such practices since the last seven years but people still send their children to work as house help.

Various factions of Karbi Students Association, local units of AASU, Bengali Students and Youth Federation, Dimasa Students Union and fourteen other ethnic organisations have condemned the incident and have demanded exemplary punishment of the offender. Several Candlelight protest march and silent demonstration were organised since yesterday in protest against the incident.

KSA Diphu District Committee President Norsing Ingti, KSU President Jirsong Ingti and Gayatri Laxmi Teronpi, KSYC General Secretary Bipul Tisso and several other members registered their protest and demanded justice for the young soul. Norsing Ingti has also demanded an adequate amount of compensation from the government at the earliest.

Gayatri Laxmi Teronpi blamed the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council for its failure in establishing proper educational infrastructure in vast areas of West Karbi Anglong district.
