Independent candidates sweep civic polls in Hailakandi

Hailakandi, March 9: The independent candidates have swept the Hailakandi civic polls has as they bagged 10 out of 16 wards in the recently held Assam Municipal Elections. Remarkably, BJP candidates have won only 6 wards.

Earlier, the BJP leaders had claimed that they will get all the seats and will form the board before the election. However, BJP remains three seats away from the magic figure.

Independent candidates have won in ward numbers 1, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 16 while BJP has won in ward numbers 2, 3, 4, 6, 14 and 15.

Most of the independent candidates severed connection with BJP after they were denied party tickets. Three of them were also debarred from the primary membership of the party for contesting against BJP candidates.

BJP MLAs and leaders earlier alleged that all the contesting independent candidates are connected with illegal syndicates and this will be inquired. Similarly, independent candidates have also alleged that the tickets of BJP were given to unknown people having no acceptability among the masses.

One of the independent candidates claimed that they will form the board. He said that the decision will be taken in a meeting of the elected ward commissioners shortly.

Meanwhile, the president of district BJP, Swapan Bhattacharjee said that they will try to form the government because some of the independent candidates have their background in BJP and he is confident that they will support the party while forming the board.

In the Lala town committee of Hailakandi district, BJP has got a clear majority and they have won in ward numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 while independents have won in 3, 7, 9 and 10.
