Silchar, Oct 29: In a welcome development, doctors at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) have successfully performed neurosurgery of two patients including one 12-year-old minor and 40-year-old male patient on Thursday.

The surgeries were done by a team of doctors including the newly joined consultant neurosurgeon Dr Sambuddha Dhar. Principal of SMCH Dr Babul Kumar Bezbaruah informed that even as both patients are doing well after surgery, they are kept under observation.

"The patients were admitted to the hospital on Tuesday and doctors including Dr Sambuddha Dhar performed surgeries today. Both patients are doing well post the operation but we have kept them under observation. We are happy for the fact that such crucial brain surgeries are done at the hospital and hope that in the future people of Barak Valley need not rush outside with their near and dear ones afflicted with neurological complications. We are thankful to Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma sir for approving the appointment of Dr Dhar and we are planning to open MCh course with the neurosurgeon's assistance here in the college," Dr Bezbaruah told The Assam Tribune.

Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli visited SMCH and congratulated the team of doctors and administrative heads of SMCH for the successful operations. Terming the developments as a historic one, Jalli said, "this marks the start of a healthier and emergency oriented health services in Barak Valley as well as for the neighbouring states. I am optimistic that the fatalities which occurred due to lack of neurosurgeons here could well be averted henceforth and qualitative health services could be brought to the doorstep of the valley. It is indeed a Red-letter day in the history of SMCH. My heartfelt thanks to honourable Chief Minister sir, honourable Guardian Minister sir for taking the initiative to appoint a neurosurgeon here and also I thank the SMCH team led by Dr Bezbaruah for welcoming the doctor with open arms. I thank Dr Sambuddha Dhar for joining the hospital and giving the people the much-needed sigh of relief."
