Jorhat, July 5: Hackers siphoned off over Rs 12 lakhs from a retired Government official's two bank accounts here by reportedly hacking the official's accounts.
The son of Dr Mohan Kakoti, a retired Government official residing in Choladhara locality here, told newspersons that his father received a message three days ago in his mobile phone asking him (his father) to call a particular number, purportedly to be of the Customer Care service of the mobile service provider company.
The message had a threat stating that if no call was made to the particular number then the SIM of the phone number (used by Mohan Bora) will cease to function, the son informed.
The son said after getting the said message, his father, fearing stopping of receiving messages from the banks related to the accounts, called the particular number and a conversation took place for about 45 minutes.
He (the son) said that following the phone call made by his father to the number it was later found that during period from Friday to Saturday evening last, over Rs 12 lakhs was shown withdrawn from two accounts of his father. The money was withdrawn through nine transactions fraudulently done by hacking the mobile phone number of his father, the son added.
He said that no OTP was received in the phone of his father, which was required to carry out a transaction in a bank account.
He said that his father had lodged a complaint at the cybercrime division of Assam Police through the helpline number that was opened to the public last week to receive complaints relating to cyber-frauds and other related crimes.
