Guwahati, May 30: Five paperless courts are being set up in the State in addition to seven exclusive courts to deal with NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases.
Taking stock of progress on various infrastructural issues, a bench of Gauhati High Court noted that an amount of Rs 3.85 crore has been allotted for making five courts paperless.
Observing that the digitisation of pending matters is yet to start on account of non-availability of certain infrastructure, the court directed the court administration to take active steps for completing the digitisation process, without which the paperless courts cannot be commissioned.
Following directions from the Supreme Court, the Gauhati High Court has also approved setting up of seven exclusive courts to deal with NDPS cases.
Initially, they were planned at Kamrup, Nagaon, Dhubri, Tinsukia, Barpeta, Morigaon and Karbi Anglong. However, the State is consulting the Union Home Ministry on whether Sribhumi and Cachar, where pendency of cases is also high, can be considered.
During the hearing, the bench was also informed that a tender has been floated for the proposed judicial guest house at Kaziranga.
