Guwahati, April 9: The Gauhati High Court on Saturday acquitted mother and sister of Govind Singhal in the Shweta Agarwal murder case which took place in 2017.

While acquitting Kamala Devi Singhal (mother) and Bhawani Singhal (sister), the court directed to conduct a re-trial of the case.

The mother-sister duo was acquitted by the high court citing a lapse in the police investigation.

Earlier in 2019, the fast-track court of Kamrup gave death sentence to Govind for burning alive college fellow Shweta while life term was awarded to his mother and sister for murder, tampering of evidence and criminal conspiracy.

Shweta's charred body was recovered from Govind's residence at Bharalamukh in Guwahati. Following an altercation, she was brutally murdered and later burned with the help of Govind's mother and sister.

Govind confessed to the crime and was sentenced to death.
