Silchar, May 24: A fishing cat (Felis viverrina) was spotted in Saidpur, Batai village under Baraigram area of Patharkandi constituency adjacent to Patheria Hill reserve forest recently.

Sources informed that the animal was causing trouble to the residents of the nearby areas by consuming domestic livestock.

After being reported, forest officials rushed to the spot and rescued the wild cat and released it immediately.

Meanwhile, environmentalists and conservationists have claimed that such species is spotted perhaps for the first time in Barak Valley.

The fishing cat is an important member of cat family. It is a medium-sized wild cat of South and Southeast Asia, environmentalists further claimed.
