Silchar, May 20: Amidst the rise in COVID-19 cases, three more patients including a youth aged just 36 years have succumbed to the disease within a day of getting admitted at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital(SMCH). A total of 99 patients are admitted in the ICU of the hospital, sources said.

Dr Bhaskar Gupta, vice principal of the hospital informed that all three patients were from Cachar district who got admitted on May 19 but collapsed on May 20. He added that the instances of people ignoring symptoms of COVID-19 and delay in seeking medical help is raising concerns and unfortunately leading to deaths.

Elaborating on the issue, Dr Gupta said ," often, the COVID-19 patients do not feel the dip in the oxygen or respiratory distress level because of hypoxia. And when the discomfort is felt, in most cases it becomes too late for a possibility of recovery. People, even with slightest of early symptoms must rush to medical help so that the procession of deaths could be averted. We urge upon People not to delay seeking medical attention because of fear or any kind of stigma. Early identification of the disease is vital for prompt initiation of treatment and easy recovery."

Meanwhile, the District Health Department informed that till 6pm, 295 patients were detected with the virus and the numbers might rise with reports of more RT PCR tests are yet to reach.
