Silchar, Oct 16: The Cachar Postal Division released a special cover on Wednesday to commemorate the contributions of Biplabi Ullaskar Dutta, an unsung hero in India's freedom struggle.

Dileep Kr Ram, senior postmaster, Silchar Head Post Office and in-charge Superintendent of Post Offices informed on Saturday that as a part of the ongoing celebration of the iconic week of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrating 75 glorious years of India's Independence from October 11 to 17 and also celebrating National Postal Week from October 9-16, the special cover remembering the contributions of Bipalabi Ullaskar Dutta was released on Wednesday which was also Philately Day.

"After India gained independence, Dutta lived at Silchar and therefore it was decided by the Department of Post to release a special cover in his honour. Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli, who was the chief guest of the occasion, released the special cover in the presence of Cachar SP Dr Ramandeep Kaur," Ram said. He added that as a part of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign, the Department of Posts also focused on opening Sukanya Samriddhi accounts on October 11. The Deputy Commissioner handed over some passbooks which were opened by the Silchar Head Post Office to the account holders to generate awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services intended for girls, he added.


Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Jalli said, "Along with its rich cultural base, this region also has ample instances of people contributing immensely towards India's struggle for freedom which makes the region all the more important in the historical perspective as well."
