Silchar, May 21: As per Assam Fishery Rules, 1953, the use of Berjal/Mahajal or Fasijal or any type of net with meshes less than 7 cm Bar/14 cm mesh during breeding season w.e.f. 1st April to 15th July in any proclaimed fishery under rule 23 (1) is prohibited.

As a part of said prohibitions, on Friday, officials of District Fishery Development Office Cachar carried out a drive against illegal manners of fishing at Rosekandi point under Borjalenga Development block against illegal fishing activities. Ganesh Borah Fishery Development Officer(Information) and his colleague Deepjyoti Bora along with the police personnel conducted a drive at three places to check such practices and disseminate awareness among the fishermen and locals on effective implementation of Assam Fishery Rules. The officials distributed leaflets and asked the fishermen to remove the barricades placed at the earliest.


It may be mentioned that keeping in view the season of fish breeding and for proper implementation of Assam Fisheries Rules 1953 and Assam Fish Seed Act 2005 District Fishery Development Officer Rafiqul Haque had in April this year formed three taskforce teams to maintain vigil and check any such illegal catching, killing and even marketing of fish seeds, as per Government orders for Silchar and also for Lakhipur subdivision.
