Silchar, Nov 27: In a major development, Pradip Dutta Roy, chief convener of Barak Democratic Front ( BDF), veteran advocate and former student leader was arrested by Cachar Police on Saturday evening after reportedly prolonged hours of interrogation.

According to sources, an FIR was filed at the Silchar Sadar Police station with allegations against him of attempting to disturb peace and harmony among communities and hurting sentiments.

Meanwhile, Cachar SP Ramandeep Kaur informed that Dutta Roy was interrogated and subsequently arrested under several sections including 153A /295/295 A/124/506/505 of IPC.

It may be mentioned, Dutta Roy had recently raised voice of protest demanding removal of a poster in Assamese text at a petrol station in Meherpur area and pressed for replacing the poster with the Bengali language with the claims that as per The Assam Official Language ( Amendment) Act 1961, Bengali is the official language in Barak Valley. He had issued an ultimatum as well.

Interestingly, according to sources, the poster was eventually removed in a circumspection manner considering the safety of the petrol station.
