Margherita, May 11: Amidst the Bihu festivities, a heinous incident took place during a Bihu cultural function in Digboi under Assam’s Tinsukia district, where a young woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by two youths.

According to sources, the heinous crime took place on April 21, when the victim went to a cultural function in Borjan. She was allegedly taken to another place by the two youths on their bike and forcefully fed her some intoxicating substances. She was then sexually assaulted by the accused. After committing the crime, the accused left the victim near her house and left.

The accused then threatened not to disclose the incident to anyone. When the locals encouraged her to lodge a complaint against the accused, the victim approached Digboi Police Station to file an official complaint in connection with the alleged sexual assault.

Sharing her ordeal with the reporters, the victim said, “I went to attend a Bihu function on that unfortunate night when the accused picked me up on their bike. They forcefully fed me alcohol despite my repeated refusal, and they sexually assaulted me. They then left me near my house.”

Based on the complaint, the police detained one accused, identified as Munna Bhumiz, while another accused, Ravi Saikia, is reportedly at large.

Meanwhile, the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association demanded the apprehension of the absconding accused within 24 hours.

One of the members said, “The victim belonged to the Tea Tribes community, and it is very unfortunate that she fell victim to this heinous crime. We demand the apprehension of the absconding accused within 24 hours.”
