Guwahati, Jun 2: An Asian Monitor Lizard, which was today spotted lying injured on the National Highway that runs through Kaziranga National Park by Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, has died.

The giant reptile with head injury was lying on the NH at Bagori range and was spotted by Neog while on her way to Golaghat.

Neog called up up Environment & Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, who directed DFO, Kaziranga, to rush to the spot and rescue the reptile.

The rescuing team found the Asian Monitor Lizard lying with severe head injury and tried to resuscitate it.

Despite its best efforts, the reptile could not be saved.

It is suspected to have been hit by a passing vehicle.

Animals are routinely hit and killed by speeding vehicles when they try to move from the plains to the hilly part across the NH, especially during the monsoons.
