Silchar, June 16: In a bid to sensitize people on the need to maintain COVID-19 appropriate behaviour amidst rising cases of the virus, the week-long drive to distribute facemasks to people on the streets got underway in Silchar on Wednesday.

According to officials of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Cachar, the drive has been initiated by Assam State Disaster Management Authority and executed by the DDMA here. This drive will be conducted across the three municipal areas of Silchar, Sonai and Lakhipur constituencies, the official said.

Meanwhile, police kept a close watch on the people found sans face-masks and pillion riding on the streets. ASI traffic branch Santanu Das informed that fines were collected from the violators of COVID norms including not wearing face-masks and pillion riding. Rs 1000 were slapped against such instances of violation, Das said.
