Hailakandi, June 24: With the death of one more employee in Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited's defunct paper mill in Assam, the death toll reaches to 90 including 4 suicides.

The president of Joint Action Committee of Recognised Unions (JACRU), Nagaon and Cachar Paper Mill, Manobendra Chakraborty informed that a 58 years old employee of Nagaon Paper Mill died today due to cardiac arrest. Chakraborty here said that the deceased was suffering from heart disease but failed to arrange money for treatment due to the non payment of salary from the last 54 months. Remarkably, his younger son also died in 2019 of serious illness.

Chakraborty said, "death toll raised to 90 includes 4 committed suicides in HPC Paper Mills of Assam, 5th death after new government in Assam came to power led by Himanta Biswa Sarma". "A Govt. Of India Owned Industries has turned to Death Valley as like as Holocaust", Chakraborty lamented. The two paper mills - Cachar Paper Mill and Panchgram in Hailakandi district and Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon district - both units of Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited - have been in non-functional condition since October, 2015 and March, 2017 respectively.

Their employees have not got their salaries for the past many months respectively. The government has finally decided to sell both the mills.
