Hailakandi, Aug 29, Police arrested 12 persons during the last 24 hours from two places of Hailakandi district for illegal smuggling of Burmese betel nut.
SP of Hailakandi, Gaurav Upadhyay informed that about 64 quintal of Burmese betel nut have been seized from their possession. On Saturday night, three persons namely, Samsuddin Laskar of Jamira, Shahid Ahmed Majumdar of Karicherra and Dilbar Ahmed Borbhuya of Katlicherra in Hailakandi district have been arrested. Similarly, on Sunday, 9 more persons have been arrested. The arrested persons are Fakaruddin of Dharighat, Raju Laskar of Dholai, Amir Uddin of Dholcerra, Mujakkir Hussain of Dholai, Zakaria Hussain of Dholai Islam, Islam Uddin of Dholai, Abdul Matin of Karicherra, Kadir Hussain and Ashok Uddin of Dholai. Nine boats have also been seized, Upadhyay said.
Upadhyay said, "the smugglers are using waterways to bring in smuggled goods from Mizoram".
